WEIRS BEACH, N.H. -- A big fish could mean a big prize on Lake Winnipesaukee this weekend as nearly 2,000 anglers take part in the 27th annual Winni Derby.

All of them are hoping for a lucky catch that lands them a new boat. The derby was started to control the fish population of the lake, and this year, more than $65,000 in prizes are available.

"The biggest thing is to get a bunch of people together and share a good weekend and share some prizes," said Rick Davis, derby founder.

Fisherman Peter Grasso said there are many factors that go into catching a big fish, from the type of fly to the time of day.

"It's about noontime now, so the fishing is usually a little slow, but this time of year, the fish are hungry and they're still up on top, and we could have some luck," Grasso said.

His expertise and a little bit of luck paid off with some good catches. Back on shore, a team weighs the fish to determine who will take home the four different boats.

The turnout of about 1,800 was lower than last year's 2,000. Organizers said they think high gas prices could be to blame.

Proceeds from the event go to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.
