Timothy Smith In Court

Man Charged With Murder Held Without Bail

Police Find Body Of Vermont Man In Haverhill

UPDATED: 5:22 pm EDT October 10, 2008

A man charged with killing a Vermont man was ordered held without bail on Friday.

Timothy Smith, of North Haverhill, N.H., was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Christopher Gray, 25, of Groton, Vt. Gray's body was discovered in Haverhill on Wednesday night after he was reported missing earlier in the day.

An autopsy report released Friday afternoon showed that Gray died of multiple stab wounds. Investigators have not released a motive, and court documents were sealed.

Anthony Howe, of Haverhill, was charged with hindering apprehension in connection with the case. In asking for increased bail for Howe, prosecutors said he destroyed evidence. Bail was increased from $30,000 to $100,000 cash or surety.

"Increased bail will ensure the defendant does not engage in any conduct to hinder the prosecution of Timothy Smith," said Lucy Carrillo of the attorney general's office.

Gray's mother and legal guardian were in court for the arraignments of Smith and Howe but didn't speak. Gray was appointed a guardian because he was developmentally delayed.

Gray's girlfriend, Sarah Quinn, said that she last saw him Sunday night when the two went to a wedding together, and he had been missing since Sunday or Monday.

"He always liked to have a good time," Quinn said. "He was laughable, he was loving and very kind hearted."

Gray worked at a Walmart in Woodsville, N.H., and lived with his guardian in nearby Groton. His guardian filed a missing person's report on Wednesday, and his body was found within 24 hours.

Some of the people closest to Gray said they had never met Smith or Howe, and those close to Howe have questions, as well.

"He's a very good boy, he's just easily led astray," said Dorothy Haynes, Howe's grandmother.
